How the Brain Signals and Interprets Pain: The Science Behind What You Feel
If You Stepped on a Rusty Nail, How Would You Know?
Your nervous system—a vast network of 45 miles of interconnected nerves—acts like an information highway, instantly alerting your brain to an injury.
But have you ever wondered how pain actually works? Let’s break it down.
What Happens When You Step on a Nail?
The moment a sharp object pierces your skin, your body springs into action:
1️⃣ Electrical signals race through your nerves, carrying an urgent message to your spinal cord and brain.
2️⃣ Your brain interprets the signals as a threat and generates pain—a warning to stop, protect the area, and take action.
This system is essential for survival. Without it, we wouldn’t know when we’re injured or when to remove ourselves from danger.
What Happens After the Nail is Removed?
🔕 Once the threat is gone, the pain should fade.
Your body starts the healing process, and ideally, within a short time, you recover and move on.
But here’s the catch… 1 in 4 people, the pain alarm doesn’t turn off—even after the injury is healed and there’s no longer any real threat. Instead, the nervous system becomes overly sensitive, keeping the pain signals active even when there’s no damage. This is how chronic pain takes hold.
Pain Isn’t Just About Injury—It’s About Perception
Many people believe that pain = damage, but research tells a different story:
✔ Pain is the brain’s way of protecting you—it’s based on perception, not just injury.
✔ Your past experiences, emotions, and environment all influence how much pain you feel.
✔ What shows up (or doesn’t show up) on an MRI or X-ray doesn’t always explain pain levels.
This misunderstanding is a huge problem in healthcare today. Many people are told that their pain is simply from tissue damage, when in reality, the nervous system is playing a major role.
How This Changed the Way I Treat Pain
After completing a 6-month post-doctoral certification to become a chronic pain specialist, I see how misunderstood the treatment of chronic pain can be in our healthcare system. At SB Mindful Momentum Physical Therapy Co., we focus on treating the whole person, not just the injury. By understanding how the nervous system influences pain, we help our patients regain control—without relying on unnecessary medications or surgeries.
